Clay Classes

One Time Clay Classes

A guided clay class for all experience levels
Join our monthly handbuilding nights! These step-by-step guided projects take you from a ball of clay, through handbuilding with assorted clay methods, to painting with colorful underglazes. Work is completed in one session, processed by SAS clay staff, and ready for pickup roughly 2 weeks after the event.

This 16+ event series is hosted on our main-floor creation space.  Zero experience needed; super beginner friendly!

Pre-registration required.

Glazing & Clay Workshops

Glazing 1/2 Day Workshop
Sunday, Oct. 22nd / 10am-1pm

Bring your own bisqueware (from a Clay for a Day workshop, or others of your own making) for glazing basics and a pots-finishing session. Attendees learn how to use dip glazes (plus some fun application methods), how the glazes and firing methods in the SAS clay studio work, and time and guidance to finish their bisqueware for firing.

Clay-for-a-Day Workshop
Sunday, Oct. 8th / 10am-4pm

A full day, intro-to-clay workshop to cover the basics and build your clay skills!  Morning will cover handbuilding and wheel basics, followed by a break for lunch, and then 3 hours in the afternoon to continue with the method of your choosing.  Attendees will receive instruction and guidance to create unique pottery of their own, and learn about different ways to work with clay.

Workshop does not include glazing/second firing - pairs well with a Glaze 1/2 Day (finishing options decided at end of workhsop based on work produced). These 18+ workshops take place in our downstairs clay studio, using assorted pottery equipment.  Beginner friendly, or a great way to practice and hone your clay skills!

The Clay Studio at Stumptown Art Studio is located down a flight of stairs, and our space is quite small. This may be an unfair obstacle for individuals with some mobility aids, service animals, and those sensitive to dust or who are at high risk for Covid19. When possible, we host our single-session clay events upstairs in the main paint-your-own-pottery space or on our back patio. Unfortunately, our multi-week classes and wheel events often must be held in our basement studio.

As an organization dedicated to education, and as artists passionate about sharing our craft, we are actively working to make our studio, our classes, and access to clay more available to communities which are often excluded from ceramics. Please contact our Clay Studio Manager to inquire about specific accommodations, or if physical or financial obstacles make it difficult for you to work with clay.
